LSU Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon survived a stroke and was released from the hospital Thursday. Cannon is an LSU Heisman Trophy winner and head of the dental program at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

He stayed in intensive care Tuesday night, placed in his own private room on Wednesday and was released from the hospital yesterday. Close friend and former teammate Warren Rabb talked with him and said, "He looked great. We were laughing and joking about old times. If anybody could pull through this, it's him."

In 1959, Cannon took number 1 LSU to a win over number 3 Ole Miss. The LSU Tigers were behind 3-0.

Billy Cannon returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown, breaking seven tackles on the way to scoring the only TD in the game.

It was a 7-3 victory for LSU in Tiger Stadium. That year, Cannon won the Heisman Trophy and was again voted the UPI College Football Player of the Year|UPI Player of the Year.
