Looks like the Red River has gone from a bass fishing mecca to one of the stingier bodies of water in the south if you asked the competing anglers in this week's Bassmaster Central Open.  However, one of Louisiana's own, Brent Bonadona walked of the weigh in stage leading after Day One.

In a press release from Bassmaster we learn:

Brent Bonadona of Port Allen, La., has been fishing the Red River for over 25 years, but he’s never seen it like this.

“I started fishing here when I was 15 years old, and I’ve never seen so many sandbars and no grass,” Bonadona said. “All you can do is chase shad.”

Bonadona did that well enough to take the Day 1 lead Thursday in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open with a five-bass limit weighing 11 pounds, 14 ounces.

On the Amateur "Co-Angler" side of things, Keatchie's own Earnest Smoak is leading after the first day with a three-bass limit weighing 9 pounds, 7 ounces.

Day Two is already underway at this point with scores of local anglers having the chance to mix it up with some of the best professional anglers in the business.  Weigh in will be at 3:15 pm today at Red River South Marina.

Day Three of competition tomorrow will feature the Top 12 anglers and co-anglers after today's weigh in and launch will again be at 7:00 am at Red River South Marina. However, weigh in time will change to 4:00 pm and will be held at Bass Pro Shops in the Louisiana Boardwalk.
