According to SportingNews.com the New Orleans Hornets NBA Basketball team will officially become the New Orleans Pelicans next season.  The NBA's Board of Governors already has approved the name change, and, as had been reported, the Pelicans' team colors will be blue, red and gold.  Owner Tom Benson, who also owns the Saints, said that over 100 names were  considered, but Pelicans best symbolized Louisiana.  Really Tom?  We know it's our State Bird, but having a mascot that's slow, relatively ugly with a big mouth nearly always full of fish?  Is that really intimidating to opponents?

Sports teams are full of Tigers, lions and bears....not Pelicans.  At least it's not as bad as some.  How about "The Banana Slug" at the University of California at Santa Cruz?  Or Evergreen State's "The Geoduck".

Others include: The Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello, the Horned Frogs of TCU, the "Fighting Pickle" at North Carolina School of the Arts and one of our personal favorites, The Fighting Okra of Delta State University.

Pelicans?  Guess it could be worse.  What other name do you think Tom should have considered before going with Pelicans?
