Is It A Summer Cold Or Something Else?
Up until Saturday night, everything was rolling along perfectly. Yeah, it's HOT as hades and I'm pretty sure it's never going to rain again but I had made it all the way through Spring without as much as a slight tickle in my throat. Seems like the older I get, the more spring time in the Arklatex shows me just how much of a pansy I've become. But not this year! I was feeling like I was 18 again...But then Saturday night, several buddies and I decided to do the "Manly Man" thing and camp out on a sand bar on the Red River and do a little cat fishing. No tent, no air conditioner...nothing. Just sleeping bags, the boat, fishing poles and hot links. BTW, the hot links were incredible...the Brookshires brand, my new favorite. Well, sometime during the night, this "thing" crept up on me. The guys said I started snoring so loudly, they really considered drowning me in the river. This "thing" was a sore throat, watery eyes and the sniffles. Just what I needed...another summer cold. Well, that's what I thought, but then I read an article on CNN.com and found out that it might not be a cold at all. In fact, it's probably allergies. What are they talking about? Allergies? What could I be allergic to in this weather? The sun has fried all the "pine mold" and I thought you had to have a little rain to have any pollen. I mean, we haven't seen rain in so long, there are kids getting their driver's license this week that have never seen a cloud...well, maybe that's a stretch but you get my point. But reading more, it could be a cold, because apparently, the problem is that not humid enough. Seriously! Here in HUMIDVILLE, we're too dry? Seems as though "cold viruses thrive in dry conditions." Isn't that our luck? We normally have to mow the yard 3 times a week because of the rain, and now "we're too dry"? We just can't win. So, I've got this cold/allergies and now want it gone...to NEVER return. What do I take? There's a million things out there. I already take Vitamin C every day. The list is CRAZY. Mucinex, Allegra, Zinc, Antihistamines...even Chicken Soup. I found a whole list of stuff that "does" and "doesn't" work from The Mayo Clinic and what I read was pretty depressing..."you can expect to be sick for one to two weeks. But that doesn't mean you have to be miserable." Oh great...I'm a DJ remember? You want to listen to some stuffy old fat guy on the radio for one to two weeks? No...I need something that will dry up the nose, clear the throat and while we're at it, shave off about 25 pounds and make me look like George Strait! So, if you've run across the "perfect solution" for the summer cold/allergies, help an old guy out and give me some advice. Course it'll take a plastic surgeon to help with the weight and "George Strait looks" so I'll just have to pass on those for now.
