Hurricane Sandy carved a path of destruction through the East Coast on Monday evening, battering Atlantic City.

Sandy is one of the most damaging hurricanes ever to hit the Northeast, spreading from from North Carolina to New England.

Over five million people were left in the dark without electricity, the most since the 2003 blackout. Cars were sent floating through the streets of lower Manhattan.

Power company officials said it could take up to a week to restore power to Manhattan neighborhoods.

Powerful gusts and storm surges brought by Sandy caused flooding in coastal communities andknocked down trees and power lines.

At least seven deaths in the New York region were caused by the storm.
