When I was in the Air Force, I was stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany for two years, and while I was there, I fell in love with German food. I tried countless dishes while I was there, but my favorite was a dish called Jägerschnitzel. Last night, I got a taste of Germany right here in Shreveport!

Just to clarify, no... it is NOT made with the herb infused liquor, Jägermeister. That would be disgusting. In fact, the German word "Jäger" means "hunter," therefore "Jägerschnitzel" means "hunter style schnitzel." That means covered in a think mushroom gravy. Yummo!

But enough with the language lesson...let's get back to me eating.

Last night was the grand opening of Evi's Schnitzel Haus' new location on Shreveport-Barksdale. I had seen them on Facebook, but didn't ever make the drive to their original North Market location. When I saw they were moving right up the street from my house, I couldn't wait to try the food. I am so glad I did.

The restaurant itself is very unassuming. I'm guessing they are still in the process of opening up to 100%, but I didn't mind. I wanted the schnitzel! If you don't know what a schnitzel is, it's is piece of pork that's been pounded flat then breaded and fried. Think of it as an old-world chicken fried steak.

Here's the thing about the food business. It's a fickle thing, so the best thing an aspiring restaurateur can do is find ONE thing they are good at, then do it. With Evi's, it's the schnitzel. Evi's has seven items on the menu. Well, actually...they have schnitzel served six different ways and one gyro. Each lovingly fried schnitzel plate comes with two sides (there are four choices) and a drink. It's enough to feed you all the way to full for less than $10, so the value is there.

As for the flavor... It tasted like I was back in Deutschland. My ONLY complaint was that is was a wee bit too salty for my taste, which may have just been a fluke that day. I also wish they had a few more side options, but other than that it was wunderbar!

All in all, I give Evi's Schnitzel Haus a rating of "B." It wasn't knock-my-socks-off amazing, but it was exactly as it presented itself. A decent, hearty, and very filling meal for a good price. Check them out!

By the way, the title of the article means "Evi's Schnitzel House is very good." Language lesson officially over.
