Fans in Omaha, Neb. who turned out for the opening night of Eric Church's Double Down Tour on Friday evening (Jan. 18) were in for a haphazard (but very fun) treat that bodes well for the rest of the run. The superstar tried his hand at Waylon Jennings' "I Ain't Living Long Like This" -- a song that, he admitted, he hadn't played for a while -- during his set, in a performance that was all the more rip-roaring for its lyric flubs.

The song was in response to a fan request, according to Rolling StoneChurch reportedly plans to make a habit out of taking song suggestions from the audience, and selecting one each night that he and his band have never played before.

"We're gonna do one more verse, and then I'm gonna drink a lot of what's in the cup. This has been some s--t, baby," Church half said, half sung to the crowd during the song, cracking a grin over his mistakes. While it might not have been a technically perfect rendition, what the singer lacked in lyrical knowledge he made up for in energy and onstage hijinks, and that is, after all, what a great live show is all about.

Jennings recorded "I Ain't Living Long Like This" in 1979, although, in fact, the song was written by Rodney Crowell and recorded first by Emmylou Harris the year before. Since then, the classic country track has been covered by country stars such as Brooks & Dunn, Chris Janson and Justin Moore.
