On Sunday, November 1, around 7:00 pm, I got the phone call that every parent dreads. My son Craig and his best friend Bobby had been involved in a terrible auto accident. How could this be?  They'd just spent the entire day with me deer hunting.  They'd only left about 30 minutes ago and now the boys were on the side of I-20 in Minden and Craig was fighting for his life.

After incredible treatment by the EMT's and paramedics on the scene from the Minden area, the boys were quickly moved to University Medical, the former LSU Medical Center.  The doctors there are unbelievable.  You can actually feel the care and love they have for their patients.  I've just been blown away by the way they've treated Craig and all of our family and friends.  I'll spend the rest of my life singing their praises!

During this first week of Craig's stay in the PICU, we've also acquired some new family members!  Craig's "suite mate" has been little Maddox Sasser.  Maddox suffers from Cerebral Palsy and it brings on a number of it's own tremendously scary complications and his recent adenoid surgery was more than his little body could handle.

But that fantastic staff at University has been there for him every step of the way. Helping his mom, the former Rachel Baker Sasser, from Stonewall, Dad, Kyle and big brother, Hudson, and all his grandparents and friends, University has gone out of their way to make Maddox comfortable and healthy.

That said, Maddox still has a long, extremely costly road ahead, but Mom and Dad are determined that if there's any way they can remove the "rough" from the road, they're all in.  They've already planned for him to attend what's essentially a cerebral palsy boot camp, with extensive training and rehabilitation, they'll go for stem cell treatment and a host of other things to make Maddox' life better.  But, as I said, these treatments are expensive, but the Sasser's are committed fund-raisers for their baby and they've gone into overdrive thanks to businesses like Twisted Root.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11, mention Team Maddox when you eat at Twisted Root and they'll donate 20% of your tab to Maddox and his family for his treatments and care.

The Sassers are truly wonderful people and well worth enjoying a great meal!
