An exchange between San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and a Miami reporter grew heated when the controversial signal caller was questioned about wearing a t-shirt adorned with the the faces of Malcolm X and Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.

The Palm Beach Post reports that, at first, Kaepernick limited his remarks to the controversial civil rights leader, but when pressed about the lack of freedom under the despot, he responded:

“One thing that Fidel Castro did do is they have the highest literacy rate because they invest more in their education system than they do in their prison system, which we do not do here, even though we’re fully capable of doing that.”

When the reporter, of Cuban descent, pointed out that thousands have been imprisoned and executed during Castro's nearly six decade long regime, The Post says he continued:

“We do break up families here. That’s what mass incarceration is. That was the foundation of slavery so our country has been based on that as well as the genocide of native Americans.”
