Brad Paisley is speaking out about his concerns for the country in the wake of the bitter and divisive 2016 presidential election, saying it's time for Americans to put aside their differences.

Though many hoped the scorched-earth negativity of the campaign would give way to unity after the results of the election, so far it has not appeared to happen, with demonstrations across the country and social media debates continuing to rage unabated.

"I am really sick of this climate -- really sick of the negativity," Paisley tells People. "I have two little boys, and I want them to feel like this is the nation that I know. That this is the nation that isn’t petty."

He adds, "We have to be as good as we want to be as a nation ... We have to do these things, we have to find love."

Paisley says he feels hopeful after witnessing the first meeting between President Obama and President-elect Donald Trump, which was cordial despite the nasty tone of the election and lasted longer than anticipated, with both men walking away saying they were committed to work together for a peaceful transfer of power.

"When you see Obama and Trump shake hands, and seem to show respect to one another -- that is what we need," he states. "I think it’s really important right now. [I was] inspired by watching [it]."

Paisley professes that he doesn't know where America goes from here any more than anyone else does, saying the coming days will be "interesting." But he adds, "I have complete and total faith in our country ... Now we can move on and see what happens."

Other country stars have also weighed in on the election results, with Craig Morgan admonishing those who threatened to move if Trump was elected, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

Ronnie Dunn was philosophical about Trump's win, which was unexpected in many media corners. "We may end up thinking he’s one of the better presidents to ever happen. You never know," he says.
