A bill that would require all school children in Louisiana be taught cursive handwriting is another step closer to passage in the Louisiana legislature.

The bill, born in the Senate, passed easily in the House by a vote of 88 - 1. Senate Bill 275 by Senator Beth Mizell of Franklinton would mandate that cursive be taught starting in grade three and practiced through high school.

Mizell argued the bill's importance by pointing out that many children can't sign their own name in cursive. As of now, 24 school districts in the state don't teach cursive to their students..

The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence.
