A Benton High School student is hosting a ball hockey tournament to benefit Be the Match, a stem cell and marrow donor registry.

Lexi Savage is holding this event in honor of her late stepfather, Bossier Sheriff's Deputy Barrett Lovell, who died from complications of his cancer in November 2015. Lovell was diagnosed with leukemia in October 2014 and underwent a cord blood transplant. Just a few months later, he learned the transplant was unsuccessful and his cancer had returned.

The tournament, called 'Facing Off Against Leukemia,' is open to the public and will be held at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds, near Hirsch Coliseum, Saturday, September 17, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The tourney is recognized as a World Marrow Donor Day event. The goal is to thank donors worldwide and raise awareness of the impact of stem cell transplants on patients' lives.

Marrow Donor Coordinator with LifeShare Blood Centers, Brian Allison, will be at the event to provide information about Be The Match and conduct registration. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 44 can join the registry and be a marrow donor if they are found to be a match.
