A blog from the Dallas Observer has ranked the "50 Best Red Dirt Texas Country Songs" of all time and we have the Top 5 results.

Amy McCarthy and Kelly Dearmore, bloggers for the Dallas Observer, underwent the near impossible task of trying to rank the Top 50 songs from a genre that isn't even comfortable with labeling itself a genre.  As Amy and Kelly put it, "there's no real definition of what makes Texas Country."

So, with that said, here's the Top Five Best Red Dirt Texas Country Songs from their list of 50.

Fifty Dollars and a Flask of Crown

    Bleu Edmondson

There are many former Louisiana Tech students who remember Bleu Edmondson from his days playing bars in Ruston. This is a quintessential "getting ready to party" song and anyone who enjoys Crown Royal should have this one on the iPod. UFC fighter Johny Hendricks has even used it as his "walk-out" song before fights.

    Carry On

    Pat Green

This is one of my personal favorites.  When I was introduced to "Texas Country," this was the song that made me want more.  If you're feeling down or in a rut, put this song on in the car with the windows down and you'll be re-energized... I promise. Pat was so successful with this song and the album "Three Days" that Nashville swooped him up.  He's been trying to earn back his "Texas Country" street cred ever since.

    My Hometown

    Charlie Robison

Brothers Bruce and Charlie Robison are icons of Texas Country music. This song, despite being less than 20 years old, is already a classic among Red Dirt listeners and is on every Texas Country radio playlist. Bruce wrote it, but he knew Charlie was the man to sing it.

    Down the Road Tonight

I don't know how you select just one Hayes Carll song to put in the top 5. My guess is that this is the song that put him on the map in 2005. "Down the Road Tonight" tells a story that you might not be ready for. Carll is not afraid to tackle any subject in his music and lyrics.  I urge you to listen to his entire catalog.

The Road Goes on Forever (and the Party Never Ends)

Kudos to Amy and Kelly for selecting this Robert Earl Keen song as their number one. If you were to ask a seasoned listener of Texas Country music to play you one song to introduce you to the genre... this song should be the one they choose. The idea of partying forever and letting the things that stress you out roll of your back is alive and thriving every time this song plays.
