I have visited the Shreveport Farmers Market 2 weekends in a row. Luckily for many vendors this weekend it was much busier than the week before. Clearly, the word is spreading on where the best produce can be found. I love having fresh fruit and vegetables and getting some dog treats that are easy on my dogs stomach. Everyone gets a treat when I visit the Farmers Market! If you're wondering if it's worth your time to go check out the Farmers Market I went ahead and put a list of reasons why you should visit the market.

1. Support local. From the slow drip coffee that takes 5 minutes to prepare to the Whoopie Pies across the market space, every single time you make a purchase your dollar is staying local. We are helping each other out tremendously. Let's keep our community thriving and support one another.

2. You're being healthy without even trying! This is a huge plus for me, I typically hate produce shopping at the grocery store. How do I correctly pick a watermelon? Is the peach going to be sour? The farmers are there walking you through how to pick the perfect fruit or vegetable. The best part is your produce isn't losing its nutritional value like it does in many cases when you shop at the grocery store. Since it isn't sitting out for several days the water content isn't absorbing all the nutrients.

3. You get to know your neighbors. I can stand there and talk to the owner of Dottie's Delights for hours. Do your dogs have stinky breathe or are they horrid chewers and need the perfect treat? Guess what, that treat is right there. I will ask several farmers how they prepare certain food items, I always come home with a new recipe! Talk to people, get to know them. Chances are they have a lot of knowledge to throw your way and help you out.

4. You're saving the earth. Turns out you don't have to shop at Whole Foods every week to feel good about yourself. On average food items in the U.S. travel about 1,500 miles to get to from the farm to your grocery store. Far from the farm to table approach at the local Farmers Market. Think of the gas, diesel, packaging, and bags you are saving by going the farm to table route!

I have loved pending time at the Farmers Market, you'll start to love it too. Make sure you check it out soon!
